Paul Rhoads and Basketball News

Dec 20, 2008
Great news to hear about Paul Rhoads. While not a flashy hire, this guy is gunna be great. Iowa roots and ties and is committed to Iowa State. Good work Jamie Pollard.

Iowa State takes on Jacksonville State tonight. After a couple of tough losses, it would be great to see the men get a nice W. They also have South Dakota State coming up who game Minnesota a run for their money. The SDSU game should be a close one.

The women take on Minnesota on Sunday. They should give our women a great test. Besides Stanford and Iowa, this should be another tough matchup.

I don't have tickets over break but I'll be doing my best to give updates on our Cyclones.

May the road be downhill and the wind at your back,

Pete

Big 12 Honors

Dec 9, 2008

Hey Cyclone Fans,

It's been a while. We've had some good and bad since the last post so I'll try to recap both the men's and women's stories.

The men have had great wins against Oregon State and UNI since their loss at Hawaii. The shining star has been Craig Brackins who has had a double-double in both Cyclone victories. His performances netted him a share of Big 12 Player of the Week (shared with Texas guard AJ Abrams.) The Cyclone women had a great trip to Hawaii as well and won some good games. The only sore spot has been a loss at Iowa this Sunday. Cyclone Alley roadtripped there along with approximately 2,500 other Cyclone fans. While the women didn't get the victory, they had great support.

Make sure to sign up for the men's roadtrip to Mizzou. It should be a great time.
Let's get men's and women's victories against Drake!

May the road be downhill and the wind at your back,

Pete

The Things We Learn

Nov 17, 2008
Pete & Hoiberg
Running a marathon was always on my bucket list. After this weekend's marathon schedule, I am rethinking my decision.

The weekend began Friday night with a nail biter over UC Davis. Before the game, I had a chance to meet my boyhood idol, Fred Hoiberg. We took a picture together with the autographed media guide he sent me from when he was a student. It was nice to win a close game. DG came up big and made that game winning bucket at the end. What won't show up in the box score is Brackin's seal to clear the path to the bucket. Good work, Craig.

Saturday seemed like a marathon for those who attended both the men's game and the football game. It turns out Wes Eikmeier can shoot. Same for Lucca. The fan's appreciation of Lucca reminds me of the love for Fizer during his hayday. Nice to see Ham get a couple of dunks during the game. He seems a little soft down low but has a lot of potential. I think the same can be said for JVB.

Sunday was a men's and women's doubleheader. The women trounced UMKC. Ashley Arlen has a lot of promise and I thought she had some great minutes. The women are going to be good this weekend. While they won't have the same amount of dunks or big blocked shots in their game, the women do play an exciting brand of basketball. Ezell didn't have a big game but Lacey looked great.

It turns out the men's team can shoot the ball. That was even with true freshman Wes Eikmeier out with the flu. Brackins was named the tournament MVP. While it was an easy choice because of the points he scored. I disagreed with the pick. I thought DG played better throughout the tournament. His turnover-assist ratio was great and he had the game winning bucket on Friday night.

The only thing that disappointed me (besides the football team not winning) this weekend were some disparaging comments made from people located in Cyclone Alley towards our team. Our job is to support the team through the thick and thin.

Loyal sons forever true!

We're Back

Nov 12, 2008
Hey gang,

Had an interesting conversation with Jamie Pollard today. I noticed at the first men's game that the coaches seemed to be wearing a marooninsh colored shirt and also that the volleyball uniforms look maroon as well. I asked Jamie what was going on and he told me that while the football and track programs are in Nike's "elite" status, our other programs (with the exception of wresting (work with Asics)) are not. Elite status work is all custom. Since the other programs aren't custom, Nike was not able to offer the custom coloring. However, next year, Iowa State will be moving toward the football colored cardinal.

Get excited for this weekend. It should be jam packed with Cyclone athletics. By my calculations, I'll be spending more time at Hilton than Larry Eustachy did complaining to officials.

Speaking of the good old days, I ran into Ha-Keem Abdel-Khaliq at a function within the College of Business. He played during the Fred Hoiberg era. We chatted for a few minutes and he wished the Cyclones well. It's fun to run into former players and ask them about their experiences. I'm still waiting for the day that I meet Jeff Hornacek. While I wasn't alive during his ISU playing career, he ranks as one of my favorite players. Maybe he'll autograph my Utah Jazz jersey.

Hope to see you all this weekend. We're handing out CA silicon bands. Also, make sure to come out and support our women's team. They should be ranked within the AP's Top 25.

May the road be down hill and the wind at your back,
Pete

Cyclone Alley Kick-Off Event

Nov 11, 2008

Hey Cyclone fans,

My name is Pete Arentson and I serve as the sponsorship coordinator for Cyclone Alley. Throughout the next few months, I’ll be keeping some thoughts on how the Cyclones are looking and what’s going on in Cyclone Alley.

November 4th was the kick off event for Cyclone Alley. We were able to give away some front row seats to the men’s Kansas game and women’s Oklahoma game and a couple of autographed basketballs. CA members also had the opportunity to play knock out against members of the men’s and women’s team. Let’s just say that there is a reason they are division one athletes.

Overall, it was neat to see the men’s team practice. Lucca didn’t participate and neither did Wes (in a boot) but it was good to see other guys in action. Petey, Brack, and AT all stepped up and seem to be team leaders.

The men kick off their exhibition season at 3:30 on Saturday against University of Nebraska-Omaha. Watch the football team at 12:30 and then come see the basketball team.

Go Cyclones!

Pete

P.S. Throughout the season, Cyclone Alley will be holding more fun events. Check out for more information regarding game watches and road trips.
